401 - Coming Home

We've made it to Season 4! New characters! Henry leaves! We recognized parts of where some of the scenes were filmed! What an exciting season premiere.

First things first, here's one of the Season 4 trailers The WB aired ahead of the new season. Like we note on the podcast, it's very visual...

Also, about that clip that opens up our episode this week...

From Charles: "The dialogue from Pacey about how senior year is just going to be a predictable mess of births, deaths, and spirals that we didn’t talk about — I’m so curious if that was meta commentary or foreshadowing. If commentary, A+ commentary. But if that’s what’s in store for Season 4... *eyes emoji*"

We didn't really have anything too negative or too, too positive to say about 4x01. For a season premiere, it's pretty good and does everything we'd hope when it comes to establishing where these characters have been and what they've been doing for the last 3 or so months.

That having been said, we still want more of the McPhees.

  1. Welcome to season 4! I can't wait to hear what Charles thinks of some later episodes - who leaves, who stays, who gets together, who breaks up.... :) listening to his reactions has been a huge part if why I love this podcast so much, much like hearing Demi's reactions on the Gilmore Guys podcast was so fun.

I don't love season 4 nearly as much as I love 3, but that's more to do with what happens later in the season - I dislike the last half-ish of s4 as much as I love the last half-ish of s3! What happens later kind of colors the whole season for me personally.

And actually, I don't love the last two seasons either. When I watched them for the first time on DVD, I stopped somewhere in early season 5. But I'll keep listening to the podcast after s4! :) the series finale is one of my favorite finales, although I could have done without them [redacted] [redacted].

I was telling Rachel via our Twitter DM that I wish they would have let Pacey and Joey be happy for an episode or two. Seems like they were given conflict like right after they got back. I agree with you, Traci and Charles, that nobody was particularly excited to see them, which is sad. Not even Bessie seemed super pumped to see Joey.

Also I love Doug and his character. There's some stuff later on that I don't like, but that's in the 6th season, I think. But he shipped PJo pretty hard in s3, which I always love. I can't wait to hear what Charles thinks of Gretchen - I have a huge crush on Sasha Alexander, and I know that's in part why I love Gretchen so much haha. But I don't like her introduction, when she's talking to Dawson, she's like "I heard about what happened last spring, you okay?" I don't mind her checking on him, but the way she said it, you might have thought someone died, not that Pacey and Joey slowly fell in love and sailed off and were happy. Ugh. She's there for Pacey, and Joey, a lot this season, which is awesome.

Can't wait to listen to more episodes!

    1. Good point on not letting couples just be happy and stay happy :(

  2. I really loved season 4, I go back and forth whether season 3 or 4 was my favorite. I know I'm in the minority as being Team Dawson but he's my favorite character. I disliked how manipulative Joey was with Dawson and the season 4 premiere displayed more of that behavior. She just won't leave him alone. She knows he's in love with her and she seems to only want to be friends and she refuses to let things die between them. Joey breaks Dawsons heart and starts dating his best friend, everyone is miserable for a while. In the season 3 finale he tearfully tells her that he won't stand in her way and she should go be with Pacey and finally all the misery can be over, right? Sigh, soon as season 4 starts we see Joey head right back to Dawson, this time making Pacey jealous and it feels like we're right back where we started.

Why can't she leave well enough alone? She is determined to have things her way with Dawson as her best friend and Pacey as her boyfriend and she doesn't care how miserable everyone else is in the process. If you know Dawson loves you but you are not interested, leave him alone. Its been 3 months and he's feeling better, why go open that wound again? Stop being selfish and do what's best for HIM and stop only thinking of yourself.

    1. We think it's frustrating that they've kind of taken the strong/independent/sassy Joey Potter and make her storylines ONLY about the love triangle stuff. That's maybe what adds to the frustration of how she's interacting with both Dawson and Pacey. (Evangeline Lilly kind of talked about it a little bit recently related to her time on "Lost," where they took her character and reduced her to being someone who just chased men around and was seen as a "wedge": https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/marcusjones/evangeline-lilly-lost-partially-nude-scenes)

  3. Awesome episode as usual like you mentioned those season 5 and 6 episodes are going to be tough there are some good ones but a lot of boring ones mixed in anyway that for a later seasons you guys mentioned Joshua Jackson hair cut I had read somewhere cant remember where that he cut his hair because of what happened with Keri Russell when she was on felicity during the break between season 1 and 2 she cut her hair and the network got mad at her so to show solidarity Josh cut his hair.
Also for the next episode this is a deleted scene https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nBNnXLCTlx8

  4. I love that Charles will only realize some of the places he saw on the trip as the seasons unfold!
Can we talk a bit about Joey's clothing this episode?? Is her bizarre backless wardrobe supposed to symbolize some sort of personal freedom achieved on the boat? Also, I had to fast forward through all the French/Andie scenes. Just unwatchable.

    1. Agreed on the Andie scenes in 4x01 - she needs better storylines than just being boy crazy! #JusticeForAndie

  5. Love the podcast and getting to hear Charles discover the show and react to it new. When first watching this show I was always confused by how Joey never acknowledged how awful Dawson was to Pacey and how he never apologizes for any of it. Pacey is always placed in the position of having to apologize to Dawson for daring to fall in love in Joey and Joey just blindly goes along with this. I feel like early seasons Joey would have at least told Dawson that he needs to apologize to Pacey if they are going to stay friends. What happened at the end of season 3 had real impacts on Pacey and his emotional state as we see next episode. Also I may be in minority but I do not like Dawson any better this season. He still treats Pacey like he is not worthy of him and that everyone goes along with it depresses me.
That said I enjoy a lot of Jen and Jack this season. And even Andie rebounds.

    1. That's a good point – Joey seems to want to keep the peace, but everyone was so hurt at the end of season 3 that it's tough to go back to how things were.

  6. The thin that irks me about Season 4 is how they make Dawson this wronged martyr, he acts like such a victim, and everyone (mainly Joey and Pacey) have to walk on eggshells around him.

  7. Oh man season four is my favorite season! I have so many feeling about this season! Pacey and Joey are still my fav couple and I will always ship them forever! (Actually it would be nice if they could just get back together IRL!) I remember being in high school when this season came out and feeling the excitement of all the changes between Dawson, Joey, and Pacey! I had my high school binder decorated with Dawson’s Creek images! Sigh...the music gets me every time and it annoys me that they took out the David Gray song because it’s such a pivotal and romantic moment between Pacey and Joey! I kind of get why Pacey is being so difficult in this episode! I mean he is completely threatened by his relationship with Joey and Dawson! He always feels that he will never measure up to Dawson and this gives him crippling anxiety which affects the relationship. Obvi we know what comes out of this...

    1. The more we listen to the original music from when it first aired, the more sad we are at the streaming versions :(

  8. Just found your podcast and slowly catching up. So fun.

I completely get how the Andie/Frenchies situation seems unbearable and unnecessary to the progress of the character now. At the time, though, it was much more exciting. John-John was played by Danny from the Real World: New Orleans, which was a heyday season of that show, and Danny was the most beloved character of that season. Hard to believe Real World was that relevant, I know, but I remember it being fairly clear in advertisements that Danny's appearance on DC was just a fun cameo appearance, so it was fairly satisfying those days.
