604 - Instant Karma!

From Traci: "Thank you all for bearing with us as season 6 bumbles along. We're trying not to be downers! In all honesty, I actually liked this episode just fine, more so than the last week's episode for sure. I just wish we could pull ourselves out of the Dawson/Joey back-and-forth..."

From Charles: "Since there are no recordings of 'Moulin Rouge' out, these are the lyrics from “I Don’t Want to Wait” that I think would work best in a song about love:

-'I don't want to wait for our lives to be over, will it be yes or will it be sorry?'
-'So breathe a little more deeply my love; All we have is this very moment'
-'In the war of '44; Every telephone ring, every heartbeat stinging; When she thought it was God calling her; Oh, would her son grow to know his father?'"

  1. A brief defense of the prof using Joey's email. Remember Joey sent it to him and everyone else - he had no way of knowing that she had sent it by mistake. Once she had sent it to everyone, it was no longer personal - she had published it. It had a title and looked like a piece of creative writing: one of the things a prof does in a writing class is critique the students' writing that is turned in to the prof. The prof could have been wrong to share it with the class without permission - but he didn't, everyone in the class already had it. What he did is exactly what a writing prof does.

    1. I have to disagree. Hetson watched Joey cringe all the way through the reading of her email and didn’t stop when she objected. He clearly enjoyed humiliating her and responded by challenging her to stop him, not by apologizing. It’s not “published” if it was clearly an unintended mistake. But I guess bullying a 19 yo student is still better than trying to sleep with them, a la Wilder.

    2. My whole point was that it wasn't 'clearly an unintended mistake' to the prof - how would he know that? - she had sent it to everyone. It was clear to us, the audience. If he had known it was unintended, then yeah, it would have been a really crappy thing to do. [I think I am just defending profs today.]

    3. I get what you’re saying about it appearing to be a creative writing piece based on it having a title ( The Incident), but I think he would realize it was a mistake because she didn’t have an intro at the beginning of her email requesting a critique or explaining what she was going for.

  2. A brief (but ultimately failed) defense of prof #2 going to parties. Maybe because I was in a small department with a small number of students who were majors as an undergrad -- but students at faculty parties, and profs dropping by student parties was really normal - and not creepy in the least. But Jack's prof crossed the line with the convo in the car: Totally unprofessional. (Although Jack would be pretty hard to resist.) Side note: the actor who plays Jack's prof is a Canadian actor that I had seen in a bunch of Canadian shows before Dawson -- I was a fan of his pre-DC. He also went on to play the tough guy detective's boyfriend in a series of 4 Canadian private eye TV movies, which are maybe my favourite movies ever (Ice Blues, On the Other Hand Death, Shock to the System, Third Man Out).

  3. You guys are so right. Eddie is a cliche, but there are people like that especially at 19/20 years old. Full disclosure, I was that girl and 19 year old me would have found Eddie deep and edgy. Thirties me can laugh at my pretentiousness and naivety.

Besides seeing reflections of my youth in Eddie, I enjoy his character because he calls Joey on her bs. My favorite scene in the episode was when he teased her about using buying a plane ticket to Paris, but not actually going. I also think it’s just refreshing to see a romantic interest outside the triangle who isn’t creepy (Wilder) or unbelievable (Charlie). Ugh Charlie, don’t get me started on how a 18 year old in a band, particularly one like Charlie who lies and cheats, would never give up the chance to tour just to hang out with Joey Potter.

I didn’t think Eddie was being mean in telling Joey how he felt about the kiss. He stated he felt used in a direct, but not cruel way. Although, maybe I’m not as sensitive as I would like to think I am. I’m also not sure he is entirely right that she was kissing him because she felt hurt over Dawson. I think when he gave her the line about ‘really living life’ she was impressed because she sees herself as someone wanting to leave her small town roots and venture into a larger world.

Out of all the adults being interested in the Dawson Creek kids storylines, I find Jack’s this season to be the least cringy. My reasoning for that is that Jack seems to be aware of how inappropriate his situation is whereas Pacey and Joey didn’t have that same awareness. On a side note about season 5, I really wish the storyline they had done with Joey/Wilder was that their romance was made public knowledge and Joey had to deal with the consequences of being seen as a person sleeping her way to the top.

I really wish that storyline didn't exist at all, but yes - that would've been an interesting direction to take it in!

  4. One of the things that bothers me about them putting Joey and Dawson back in that "will they or won't they" mess ao quickly is that it made Joey look like a liar. The whole season four Joey was telling Pacey that Dawson was he past, or how when she saw the future it was with Pacey, how Pacey shouldn't worry etc etc, it just made her look bad and they gloss over it. It really didn't need to be rushed. They made it seem like Joey didn't want Dawson in the romantic way because she was so in love with Pacey yet a few weeks after she and Pacey break up, she's kissing Dawson and obsessed with him again. It's just so weird.

    1. True – that's definitely why we're stuck on the lack of closure with the Pacey/Joey ship and why it felt so sudden that Joey was on board with Pacey/Audrey. Basically...season 5 was a mess...

  5. The thing is that it’s the Joey/Dawson ship, not Joey/Pacey, that suffers the most from that lack of development. At least P/J got a really well written arc to convincingly fall in love. And they stay close friends after. I’ll never understand why the show makes so much of D/J at the end of S4 and beginning of S5 with no time spent rebuilding their feelings for each other. Joey gets her heart broken and then shows up in college talking about how Dawson is the love of her life?!? With no explanation it just seems like she’s on the rebound. And one moment Dawson’s willing to leave LA and move back for her and the next he’s dating Jen and doesn’t give a f*** about Joey. They don’t spend any of S5 or 6 dating but the show wants us to believe they’re each other’s greatest love? It’s like the writers keep trying to tell one love story but unintentionally end up telling a different one altogether as if they couldn’t even convince themselves about D/J.

    1. I'd like to think that, at the end of the day, the show is trying to tell us there are different definitions for what a "soulmate" is...although it's quite poorly executed, you're right!

    2. @Anonymous - 100% with you on this one! Dawson and Joey don't even seem like very good friends half the time, let alone lovers/soulmates.

I'll never get over the lack of closure in the P/J relationship.
