608 - Spiderwebs

Last week, Charles predicted that nothing good ever happens at concerts on "Dawson's Creek"...and, well, he wasn't wrong.

  1. I don't know what they were thinking with the Audrey/CJ thing. I get that they needed a catalyst for Jen to cut Audrey off so that Audrey could continue her downward spiral, but I don't really think they realized what that said about CJ. I can see why CJ would be interested in Audrey, given his own struggles, but him sleeping with her when he knows that she's depressed and has an addiction spiraling out of control is so gross. Maybe if their hookup didn't take place entirely off screen, it would have been different. Like if we saw the rest of the night after Audrey and Joey fought where CJ hangs out with Audrey at a diner for the rest of the night while she sobers up because she doesn't feel like she can go home... and I can't believe I'm starting to work out fanfiction about two characters I couldn't care less about!

Also, poor Emma, not only having to deal with the gang's BS, but also being half-assedly groomed to be Pacey's love interest. I always forget that they set them up to be a thing. Joshua Jackson is usually a chemistry magnet, but they are so incredibly bland together.

    1. Her fake-ass accent is so off-putting but yes, I agree. Why was she even on the show???

    2. Her accent drives me nuts. People come to Hollywood from all over the world trying to make it. They couldn’t have found an actual British person to play Emma or at least someone who is better at accents?

      Delete
    3. RIGHT? I'm still not sure why she had to be British in the first place, other than because of that storyline they brushed up against in ep 14 and then swiftly abandoned. Other than using terrible British slang (that nobody actually uses) in a terrible fake accent, she might as well have been American. There are more cultural differences between Americans and Brits than just a few slang words. (Same goes for Todd, although at least he's actually from London. His dialogue is horrific though.)

    4. I’m thinking they made her British because the writers thought it would make her more punk rockfish.

  2. I never watched season 5 and 6 when they actually aired. I got bored with Dawson’s Creek after high school, so I can’t comment entirely accurately on what teenage me would have thought of CJ. Thirties me thinks he’s creepy. I only know Jensen Ackles from Supernatural where his charms are on full display. When I first saw him earlier in the season, my reaction was “ hey, I didn’t know he was on this show and what the hell did they do to his hair.” I was quite surprised with his character development. I guess having seen a few seasons of Supernatural I assumed his character on Dawson’s Creek was going to be a loveable wiseass. Instead, the character of CJ took a pretty dark turn. Like the commenter, above I’m not sure the writers entirely understood how badly CJ came off in this episode. I was actually nervous for Audrey when CJ was manhandling her/pushing her through the doors of the arena.

In regards to Jen only getting to be boy crazy, it is frustrating but makes some sense for her character. Her two main issues have always been making her peace with her parents/Grams and overcoming her image of herself as New York Jen. She’s resolved her issues with her family, so now there’s just New York Jen. I think in her mind she needs a nice guy who wants a relationship with her not just sex. She thinks CJ is that nice guy. I’ve felt second hand embarrassment for her during most of her interactions with CJ this season. Being rejected sucks and I just felt so bad for her though this episode made me see at least she’s dodging a bullet. I was a bit angry at her for asking CJ if he had slept with girl he was interested in ( before she knew it was Audrey). That’s absolutely none of her business. It wasn’t ok when Dawson asked Joey about sleeping with Pacey back a couple of seasons ago and it’s not ok for Jen to ask CJ now. Does no one on this show understand boundaries?

Also surprised at Dawson and Natasha’s relationship. I thought when they did the whole scene with Natasha confronting Dawson in front of Joey, they made it seem like Natasha was actually interested in Dawson romantically. Now, it seems that this isn’t going to develop into anything serious.

    1. This show and boundaries have never been on speaking terms.

    2. That's a good point about it not being any of Jen's business. She and CJ aren't involved! But I assume she's asking from a place of deep hurt...

Also: "This show and boundaries have never been on speaking terms" - LOL

  3. At the point when Jensen Ackles joined the cast of DC, he was my #1 crush - and this was before Supernatural was even a thing (Dark Angel was underrated, guys. Okay fine, the show sucked, but Jensen KILLED it in both the roles he played). So I was predisposed to like him when he turned up on DC but honestly, even I couldn't really like his character. At the time (I was in my early 20s when I watched this originally), I thought it was a bit shitty of him to go after Audrey when he knew that Jen liked him, but I also thought that Jen was being a bit of a princess about it since he'd made it clear that he wasn't into her. (And I do hold to that, although I'm also in the 'Jack should have said something so she didn't embarrass herself' camp.)

But NOW that I look back at it, I think it's pretty clear that CJ is a garbage human being, and I definitely gave him more of a pass back then. The guys on the Creek of the Week podcast call him out as a rapist every time he comes onscreen, and they're not wrong. At least, we don't know that they're wrong, because the last we saw, Audrey was absolutely hammered that night. Like Unknown said above, we don't know what the sequence of events were, but I also agree that the writers clearly didn't think about what that did to CJ's character. And honestly, he kinda gets worse from here on out. What an absolute waste.

I never rewatch these episodes, so I haven't seen this one in years. My season 6 starts in 6 episodes' time... #cantwait

    1. How society views consent has definite changed in the last 15ish years. I don’t think a scenario like CJ and Audrey’s would play the same on TV today.

    2. Pacey was spot on calling him predatory.

    3. Jensen Ackles was on Days Of Our Lives back in the day! Cute memories. This DC role was weird, and this Audrey storyline was the worst moment of it. Yuck, and offensive.

    4. In defense of CJ Audrey does explicitly say she’s sober, “in case he was wondering.” So the writers were at least aware of that. But it’s still suspect that her being hungover and depressed is when he’s most attracted to her.

    5. @AreesahM I remember him in Days of Our Lives! I'd seen him in Dark Angel and had looked up his previous work, and by some crazy coincidence, the episodes of Days that were playing in New Zealand at that time were the ones that he was in. I started watching it just in case (I was studying for university exams at the time) and he popped up within a couple of episodes. Needless to say I was delighted and Days became my customary lunch break TV show every day. Such a hilariously terrible show.

And yes, Pacey was absolutely spot on. I wish the show had explored that side of CJ - or at least shown some awareness of it, as opposed to where it does go. Which is, from what I recall, the show almost entirely forgetting about his predatory behaviour. Charles saying he has no idea how a Jen/CJ storyline could go forward from here is kind of depressing - his behaviour wouldn't fly with audiences today (unless he was a vampire, they seem to get away with anything) - but it's also well documented that Jen has terrible taste in men, so... #JusticeforJen

  5. In other news, what was up with the blue frosted eyeshadow Joey and Natasha were sporting? Not to mention Natasha's 'interesting' fringed cardigan! Definitely best left in the 2000s hahaha.

Also, I found it odd that everyone kept saying Audrey had a boyfriend when she slept with CJ - she didn't though - her and Pacey were 100% broken up? I don't understand why this was never corrected!?

Also, also, Joey saying she doesn't like PDAs...she didn't mind them with Pacey #justsaying :)

    1. I think the only one with the coloring to pull off those pastel eyeshadows is Audrey. I guess at least she has that going for her this season

I think it was mostly Jen mentioning Audrey having a boyfriend . She wanted CJ to turn his attentions away from Audrey, so she finessed the truth there.

  6. This episode was one giant No Doubt music video mixed with rehashed character story lines from previous seasons. Dawson & Joey both discover themselves with other non-soulmate people. Pacey is making empty declarations he never lives by and punching people because chivalry ain’t dead, it’s a goatee. Sidenote: Why is everyone else always in Pacey’s rearview mirror? His character always “gets it” until he doesn’t get it and it’s annoying. Moving on. Jen is perpetually in some self-imposed personal turmoil over some guy. She self sabotages and sets herself up for failure like this. Play the field, Jen. What happened to her cynicism? She’s gone soft on us. Jack is still the level headed gay oracle, but with 15% more “bro-dude”. This show repackages everything from earlier seasons.
